Drinking Water Filter Comparison

A growing number of Americans are turning to bottled water as an alternative to tap water. However, the term "bottled water" carries no guarantee of purity. Some bottled waters are actually no cleaner than ordinary tap water. Bottled water is also quite expensive, inconvenient, and environmentally unfriendly with millions of empty bottled water jugs being dumped into our landscape every year, adding more waste to our environment.

Faucet Mount and Pitcher Filters

These systems require filter cartridges that need to be changed every 100 to 1,000 gallons depending on the brand. For example, the Brita Faucet-Mount Water Filter and PuR Faucet-Mount Water Filter need to be changed every 100 gallons. The EnerGel Faucet Mount Water Filter purifies 2,000 gallons of water before needing to be changed. But EnerGel Counter Top Water Filters and Under Counter Water Filters purify 10,000 gallons and, depending on the model purchased, may never need a filter change.

Disadvantages: Changing filter cartidges is expensive, time consuming, and environmentally unfriendly. These types of filter cartidges don't allow water to be in contact with carbon long enough for efficient removal of the most harmful substances present in your water.

Distillation

Distillation works by vaporizing and condensing water. It removes most bacteria, viruses, and chemicals.

Disadvantages: Distillation removes all trace minerals, some of which are necessary for good health. Using this method also requires electricity, and most models are energy intensive and costly to operate.

Reverse Osmosis

Reverse osmosis uses pressure to force water molecules through a membrane. Systems using this method are effective in removing fluoride, nitrate, pesticides, heavy metals, and brackish water problems.

Disadvantages: It is expensive, and takes 8 to 9 gallons of water and 3 hours to produce 1 gallon of treated water.

Ultraviolet Disinfection

Ultraviolet disinfection kills viruses and bacteria, and can also eliminate some organic chemicals by using UV light.

Disadvantages: This is expensive and ineffective in water that is colored or has high turbidity.

Water Softening

Water softeners exchange sodium for magnesium and calcium, and are effective for removing metals such as magnesium, iron, lead, and radium.

Disadvantages: Water softeners add sodium during their process, wc may be harmful to your health. They are not effective for removing unwanted organic chemicals, tastes, and odors. They usually treat the entire home water supply—not just water used for drinking and cooking.
